Sam would be racing 150 laps this week, but in two 75 lap feature races. In this format, there's a break between the races where adjustments can be made to the car but no tires can be replaced. As was the case the previous two races, there was no opportunity to practice qualifying runs or test due to rainy weather and wet track conditions on Friday. Once again, the track still had areas of dampness on race day that made fast laps at the 1/2 mile track interesting to say the least. The two open practices on Saturday, prior to qualifying, Website Designed, Hosted and Maintained by RACE22.com "Twins Bare Fruit" gave the team a chance to experiment with a new shock package that crew chief Mike Lee had suggested. Although the practice sessions weren't as productive as a full day of testing, the team discovered the new shocks did help the car. During the practice session(s) Sam was also able to map the track and determine where moisture was still affecting the car's handling. After the second session the team rolled the car threw tech and lined up to begin their qualifying laps. Sam was the 2nd car to qualify and even though the track temperatures were warmer than the previous race, the combination of new tires, cool track temperatures, and moisture on the track made tire grip a real challenge. The first car to go out spun down the back straight but fortunately avoided contact with the wall. Sam's qualifying run was another disappointment and was actually slower than the times he posted earlier during practice. As the qualifying runs wound down the team became more satisfied with Sam's performance as they witnessed several cars spin and two cars actually wrecking hard into the wall and ending their day before the race even started. Sam would line up 14th for the race. When the field took the green flag for the first 75 lap race, Sam laid back and let the field settle into turn 1 and avoided any first lap heroics or disasters. Once the field got sorted out, Sam found himself in 16th position and ran in that spot for the first 45 laps. On lap 46, the #94 and the #14 cars got tangled up in turn 3, and the caution flag waved. When the race restarted, Sam lined up in the 14th spot and immediately started pushing the car harder for the final laps of the race. His lap times were actually improving even though his tires began to wear. Sam drove hard under the #7 car and continued to work to pass. Now they were both pushing the #9 car and passed him in turns 3 and 4. As the laps ran down, Sam, as well as the #7 car, avoided another spin involving the #94 and were able to pass one more car before the race ended. Sam had worked his way to 10th place, his best result in 10 races at South Boston over a 12 month period. In the second feature, Sam started 10th, his finishing position in the first race. After losing a spot in the opening corner to the #04, Sam regained the position and settled into 10th. He rode on the tail of the #7 for 30 laps until another caution, caused when the #94 car made contact with the #44 car in turn two. When the green flag came out Sam lined up in 8th place and was running competitive lap times, "mixing it up" with the #44 and the #7 cars as they battled for the 6th, 7th, and 8th position. On lap 34 there was another wreck in turns 3 and 4 amongst 4 cars, including the #44 that was directly in front of Sam. At that point, the track was completely blocked and it looked like Sam had nowhere to go! Sam's spotter, Larry Hollowell, quickly screamed through the radio "Go Low! Go Low! ". Sam listened and darted the car low towards the inside wall and narrowly avoided contact. He had avoided both the #44 and the #14. On the re-start Sam would line up 6th but elected to stay low on the **"cone restart" as several cars selected the high line. Sam held his ground and slipped into the 8th position and ran there for 15 laps when another caution occurred. This was the third incident of the night between #94 and #14. After a good restart, Sam ran in 8th until his teammate and coach, Frank Deiny, passed him on lap 60. Sam was able to hold the position for the remaining laps and finished the second race in 9th place. A second top 10 for the night!
Sam Hunt comments: **Cone Restart: A cone is placed in the middle of the front stretch and cars can elect to go low and maintain the most advantageous line or go high and advance towards the front but, risk being hung out on the less advantageous high line. |
